Summer 2017 Workshop at Franciscan Guest House at Kennebunk
Monika Sabalis of the Ateitis Foundation invited Don and Kathy Astras to participate in the Ateitininku Sendraugiu Savaite to make straw ornaments at the Franciscan Guest House in Kennebunk, Maine.
In their workshop on August 9, 2017, Don and Kathy taught how to make these beautiful, Lithuanian straw Christmas ornaments. In the afternoon session, Don introduced his mother, Ursula Astras’, legacy to the attentive crowd through a slide presentation of her art and life. In the evening, Don and Kathy taught the craft of designing, cutting and gluing ornaments from straw applique. Each session lasted one and one-half hours. Between sessions, there was a wine and cheese reception, where the students asked questions, and ate a lobster dinner.
There were more than 40 students including people from nearby towns. Don and Kathy enjoyed interacting with them. Everyone completed an ornament and took handouts with detailed instructions home.
According to Don, this workshop was special because he had been a student at St Anthony’s High School, which was taught by the Franciscans, who had converted it to the Franciscan Guest House. Monika and Paul Sabalis were the most gracious hosts.
